In 1982 I began my photography career as a photo "stringer" for the Dunnellon Press in Dunnellon, Florida and soon moved to being a contract photographer for the St. Petersburg Times, Citrus Times Edition in March of 1983. During this time I enrolled in the New York Institute of Photography where I obtained my degree in Professional Photography in July of 1987. In June of 1987 I left photojournalism for my own location and studio business in Commercial Photography. In the years between 1987 and 1992 I operated C. Rick Spence Photography where I specialized in Interior and Exterior photos of Residential and Commercial Buildings using 6 x 4.5mm medium format and 35mm small format cameras on location all over Central and South Florida. Some of the notable buildings and developments I have photographed are the interior of the SunTrust Tower in Orlando, the Volusia County Commission Chambers in Deland, Citrus Hills Development in Citrus County and Spruce Creek in Marion County. As a studio commercial photographer I specialized in product catalog photography using both 4x5 large format and 6x4.5mm medium format cameras and processing most of the film and prints using my in-house, full color and B&W darkroom with printing capability from 4x5" to 16x20" prints and transparencies. Much of my work was done for Grafito Advertising of Ocala where I was awarded several Local Gold and Silver ADDY awards for my work. As a member of the Florida Professional Photographers I was active in the NCFPP guild in Gainesville where I was it's president in 1990 and I was twice in charge of the Wedding Album Competition at the annual State Convention Salon held in Orlando each year. As an avid competitor in photographic competition, I have earned 10 merits in Salon Print competition and lack only 6 merits to earn the coveted Florida Degree of Photographic Excellence (FDPE).
